TWO Open Rank, Tenure-Track Faculty - Atmospheric Hazards
TWO Open Rank, Tenure-Track Faculty - Atmospheric Hazards
Description
The Department of Geosciences at Texas Tech University invites applications for two open rank tenure-track faculty positions to begin Fall 2026. The positions are part of a University-wide Atmospheric Hazards Initiative in partnership with the National Wind Institute. For both positions, we seek applicants who will advance physical/mathematical understanding of the atmosphere to address atmospheric hazards that are becoming more frequent and more intense, while growing resilient communities. The two positions are described in more detail below, with full details on each position available at the links provided.
(42621BR) Precipitation Extremes & Severe Storms: We seek applicants whose research intersects precipitation extremes with severe storm and hurricane hazards to advance understanding and predictability of atmospheric impacts in a dynamic climate system. Areas of interest include remote sensing and/or modeling of precipitation in extreme weather, cloud and precipitation microphysics, and next-generation microphysics parameterizations. The successful candidate will contribute to multidisciplinary efforts aimed at mitigating atmospheric hazards, improving operational forecasts, informing engineering design, and advancing communication of societal impacts. Experience with or linkages to NASA, DOE, or NOAA programs in precipitation science and cloud microphysics is highly desirable.

(42556BR) Data Science (AI/ML & Numerical Weather Prediction): We seek applicants who apply artificial intelligence and machine learning to advance numerical weather prediction and improve understanding of atmospheric processes—integrating data-driven and physics-based approaches. Ideal candidates will be skilled in working with diverse observational and model datasets, familiar with modern data infrastructure and open-source scientific software, and enthusiastic about mentoring students. Collaboration across disciplines to develop engineering and socially actionable strategies that reduce the impacts of atmospheric hazards is essential.
